The Background and History of SCC PDF Print E-mail

Springbourne Christian Centre is an Elim Pentecostal church, and as such is part of a worldwide network of orthodox Christian Churches. There has been a church from this denomination in the Springbourne area for over 75 years.

It began after a small number of people were won to Christ in a mission held by a man called Gypsie Smith in the early 1900's. They met together in the Springbourne area regularly from that time. In the 1920's George Jefferys, a formidable evangelist and the founder of the Elim movement, held a campaign in Bournemouth. He began in Moordown, and eventually moved to Springbourne meeting in King's Park, Boscombe Grove Road and the Holdenhurst Road.

Springbourne Elim began in 1926 when a group of Pentecostal believers in Gravesend bought a building for the new converts to meet in Victoria Place. In 1956 the present building was purchased, it previously was a Primitive Methodist church and this has been our home and base for worship and mission since.
